South Coast Challenge promotes a better world for children with Diabetes

About Us

We are all in this together – nobody knows if their son daughter brother or sister has diabetes until it happens I know it happened to me. It normally occurs from around 4 years old to about 11 years old but at present there is no cure and if your child contracts diabetes its for life. Although most of us have heard about the condition we normally know adults who have type 2 diabetes not the type 1 that is contracted by children. A lot of these children might only see other type 1 children at the clinic which is not very often and in a formal enviroment.

Our Work

Type 1 or juvenile diabetes currently affects 260,000 children in the UK, and across Europe incidences are increasing by 3-4% every year in children aged under 15.  People with type 1 diabetes must frequently measure their blood glucose levels and are dependent on insulin injections to stay alive. However these injections do not prevent the potential long term effects of diabetes, which can include blindness, limb amputations, strokes and heart disease.

Our Aim

THE AIM

I am hoping to raise funds for the Southampton juvenile diabetes team to ensure that all 204 children who attend the ward can go on the wards activity events.  The events are important for the children not just from the social aspect but also as a learning tool. They show the children that they are not alone and learn different methods of controlling there diabetes from each other. These activities are not free and for some families are unaffordable. My aim is simple raise as much money as possible to enable every child who’s family simply cannot afford the trips the opportunity to attend the activities.

This year I hope to raise at least £5000.00 by canoeing from Southampton to Lands End a total of 300.miles

there will be 2 kayaks setting off in October 2012.
